Kecak at Sunset in Uluwatu

Uluwatu, BaliBali & Nusa TenggaraCulture

A circle of chanting men tells the Ramayana on a clifftop as the sun goes down over the Indian Ocean.

Pura Luhur Uluwatu stands on a limestone cliff at the south-western tip of Bali. Beside the temple is an open amphitheatre where Kecak is performed at the end of the day, timed to the sunset.

Arrive early, as the seats face west and fill quickly, and keep an eye on the temple's monkeys.

Why it matters

It is the most dramatic setting for Bali's best-known dance drama.

What makes it unique

The only accompaniment is the chant of the performers themselves.

Good to know

  • About an hour, at sunset
  • A clifftop amphitheatre
  • No instruments — only voices
