Penglipuran, a Village Laid Out by Custom

Bangli, BaliBali & Nusa TenggaraCommunity

A highland Balinese village where every house compound opens onto one stone lane and customary law still orders daily life.

Penglipuran sits in the cool hills of Bangli. Its single main street climbs gently toward the village temple, with near-identical gateways on either side leading into family compounds. Motor vehicles are kept out of the lane.

The village is governed by its own customary rules (awig-awig), and a bamboo forest that it protects lies just beyond the last houses.

Why it matters

It shows how Balinese village life is organised — around temple, lane and compound — more clearly than busier towns do.

What makes it unique

The layout follows the Balinese sacred axis, rising from the lower end of the village to the temple at the top.

Good to know

  • One car-free main lane
  • Protected bamboo forest
  • Customary village law
