Tenganan and the Double-Ikat Cloth

Tenganan, Karangasem, BaliBali & Nusa TenggaraCraft

One of Bali's old Bali Aga villages, known for geringsing — a cloth so complex that a single piece can take years.

Tenganan Pegringsingan is home to the Bali Aga, people who trace their customs to before the arrival of the Majapahit court culture that shaped the rest of the island. The walled village keeps its own calendar of rituals.

Its weavers make geringsing, a double ikat in which both warp and weft threads are tie-dyed before weaving. The technique is practised in only a few places in the world.

Why it matters

It preserves an older layer of Balinese culture and one of the most demanding textile techniques anywhere.

What makes it unique

Double ikat is made in very few places — Tenganan is the only one in Indonesia.
