Sidemen Valley

Sidemen, Karangasem, BaliBali & Nusa TenggaraHidden Gem

A quiet valley of rice terraces in east Bali, with Mount Agung filling the horizon.

Sidemen lies on the road between Klungkung and the slopes of Mount Agung. There is no single sight here — the appeal is the valley itself: terraced fields, small temples, irrigation channels and footpaths between villages.

The area is also known for hand-woven songket and endek cloth. It suits walking, slow mornings and a day with nothing planned.

Why it matters

It is what much of Bali looked like before the south coast filled with resorts.

What makes it unique

On a clear morning Mount Agung, Bali's highest volcano, stands directly above the fields.
