Nglanggeran, the Village Under an Ancient Volcano

Nglanggeran, Gunungkidul, YogyakartaJavaCommunity

A community-run village east of Yogyakarta where a short climb between giant boulders ends in a wide view over the hills.

Nglanggeran lies in the Gunungkidul hills, below the weathered remains of a volcano that was active tens of millions of years ago. Villagers manage the trail, the homestays and the cocoa and fruit gardens themselves.

The walk to the top takes about an hour through narrow rock passages. In 2021 the village was named one of the UN World Tourism Organization's Best Tourism Villages.

Why it matters

It is a working example of tourism run by a village for its own benefit.

What makes it unique

Huge rounded rock towers above terraced fields — a landscape unlike anything else near Yogyakarta.
