Yogyakarta's central market: batik at the front, spices and herbal jamu deeper in, and market snacks in between.
Pasar Beringharjo stands at the northern end of the old palace axis, beside Malioboro Street. It has been the city's main market since the sultanate was founded in the 18th century, and it is still where people come for cloth, spices, dried herbs and everyday goods.
Come in the morning. The front halls are stacked with batik; deeper in are sellers of jamu ingredients, traditional snacks and simple cooked food such as pecel.
Why it matters
A market shows what a city actually eats and wears. Beringharjo has done that for Yogyakarta for more than two centuries.
What makes it unique
It sits on the symbolic line that links the palace, the market and Mount Merapi.
