The world's largest Buddhist temple, built in the 9th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Borobudur was built by the Sailendra dynasty around the 8th–9th century. Its nine stacked platforms are topped by a central dome surrounded by 72 perforated stupas, each once holding a seated Buddha.
Pilgrims walk clockwise upward past more than 2,600 relief panels that tell Buddhist teachings and scenes of ancient Javanese life. Sunrise over the surrounding volcanoes is one of Java's great sights.
