A riverside neighbourhood in Malang that repainted itself in bright colours and changed its own fortunes.
Jodipan sits on a steep bank of the Brantas River, below a railway bridge. In 2016 a group of university students worked with residents and a paint company to cover the houses, steps and alleys in colour.
The project turned a neglected kampung into a place people came to see, and residents now look after it themselves.
Why it matters
It is a rare example of a neighbourhood improving its own conditions through a creative project.
What makes it unique
Seen from the bridge above, the whole hillside reads as one painting.
