A turquoise acid lake and the rare glow of blue fire at night.
Ijen's crater holds one of the world's largest highly acidic lakes, its water a milky turquoise. Burning sulphur gas creates an eerie blue flame visible only in darkness.
Miners still carry sulphur by hand from the crater floor. Visitors hike up before dawn, ideally with a proper gas mask.
