Walk Through Glodok, Jakarta's Old Chinatown
Glodok, West JakartaJavaExperience
Temple incense, a narrow market lane and some of the city's oldest food stalls, a short walk from Kota Tua.
Glodok has been the centre of Jakarta's Chinese community since the 18th century. Its heart is Petak Sembilan, a lane of market stalls leading to Vihara Dharma Bhakti, a temple founded in 1650 and the oldest Chinese temple in the city.
Go in the morning, when the market is busiest. The surrounding streets are known for long-running food stalls and coffee shops.
Why it matters
It is where Jakarta's trading past is still visible at street level.
What makes it unique
A 17th-century temple, a wet market and old shophouses sit within a few hundred metres of each other.
