Setu Babakan, the Betawi Cultural Village
Srengseng Sawah, South JakartaJavaCommunity
A lakeside neighbourhood in South Jakarta set aside to keep Betawi houses, food and performing arts alive.
The Betawi are the people who emerged from the mix of communities in old Batavia. Setu Babakan, around a small lake in the south of the city, was designated a Betawi cultural village to protect their traditions as the capital grew around them.
Visitors find traditional Betawi houses, food stalls selling dishes such as kerak telor, and performances of music and dance when they are scheduled.
Why it matters
Jakarta's own culture is easy to miss in a city of migrants. This is where it is deliberately kept.
What makes it unique
A whole neighbourhood, with people living in it, rather than a museum.
