Play Angklung at Saung Angklung Udjo
Bandung, West JavaJavaCulture
A bamboo-music centre in Bandung where the audience is handed an angklung and taught to play along.
The angklung is a Sundanese instrument of bamboo tubes that sound when shaken; UNESCO listed it as intangible heritage in 2010. Saung Angklung Udjo was founded in 1966 by Udjo Ngalagena and his wife Uum Sumiati to teach and perform it.
The afternoon programme mixes short performances by children with a session in which everyone in the audience plays. Performance times can change, so check before you go.
Why it matters
It turned a village instrument into something any visitor can play within minutes.
What makes it unique
Each angklung plays a single note, so a melody only exists when the whole room plays together.
