Sade, a Sasak Village
Sade, Central LombokBali & Nusa TenggaraCommunity
A hillside hamlet in southern Lombok where Sasak families still live in thatched houses with clay floors.
Sade is one of the best-known traditional villages of the Sasak, the people of Lombok. Its houses (bale tani) have steep roofs of alang-alang grass and woven bamboo walls; rice barns with rounded roofs (lumbung) stand between them.
Floors are traditionally made of clay and polished by hand. Women weave on backstrap looms in front of the houses, and villagers guide visitors themselves.
Why it matters
It is a direct look at Sasak building and household traditions on an island often seen only for its beaches.
What makes it unique
The curved lumbung rice barn seen here is the symbol of Lombok.
