A village of seven cone-shaped houses in the mountains of Flores, reached only on foot.
Wae Rebo lies in a highland clearing in Manggarai, about three hours' walk from the nearest road. Its tall, conical houses, called mbaru niang, are each home to several families and are rebuilt using traditional methods.
Guests are received with a welcome ceremony in the main house and usually stay the night. The rebuilding of the houses won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award in 2012.
Why it matters
It is one of the last places where this form of Manggarai house survives as a living village.
What makes it unique
The whole community lives in seven houses arranged around a stone altar.
