What is IDX?

The Indonesia Stock Exchange — the one marketplace where shares of Indonesian public companies are traded.

IDX stands for the Indonesia Stock Exchange (Bursa Efek Indonesia, or BEI). It is the country's only stock exchange, based in Jakarta, and was formed in 2007 when the Jakarta and Surabaya exchanges merged.

A company that wants to raise money from the public can list its shares there. From then on anyone can buy or sell those shares through a licensed broker, and the company must publish its financial reports and announce important events.

Shares on the IDX are quoted in rupiah and identified by a four-letter ticker: BBCA for Bank Central Asia, TLKM for Telkom Indonesia.
