Arborek, a Village on the Reef
Arborek, Raja AmpatPapuaCommunity
A tiny island village in Raja Ampat whose residents run homestays, weave pandan crafts and look after their own reef.
Arborek is small enough to walk around in half an hour. It was one of the first villages in Raja Ampat to organise community-based tourism and local marine protection.
Women's groups weave hats and bags from pandan leaves, and the water under the jetty is full of fish. Manta rays are often seen at a cleaning station nearby.
Why it matters
It shows conservation and income working together in one of the world's richest marine areas.
