The largest volcanic lake on Earth, with Samosir Island rising from its centre.
Lake Toba fills the caldera of a supervolcano that erupted around 74,000 years ago. At roughly 100 km long, it is the largest volcanic lake in the world, and Samosir Island in its middle is about the size of Singapore.
The lake is the homeland of the Toba Batak people. Villages such as Tomok and Ambarita keep carved stone sarcophagi, traditional rumah bolon houses and the sounds of gondang music.
